Quality Function Deployment in Healthcare
Quality Function Deployment (QFD) is a structured methodology for translating customer needs into specific technical requirements. While originally developed for manufacturing, it has important applications in healthcare that are relevant to the CPHQ exam.
The House of Quality
The primary tool of QFD is the House of Quality matrix. The left wall contains customer requirements (what patients and families want). The ceiling contains technical requirements (how the organization will meet those needs). The body of the house shows the relationship between customer needs and technical solutions. The roof shows correlations between technical requirements. The foundation contains competitive benchmarks and technical targets. This visual tool helps organizations systematically connect patient expectations to organizational capabilities.
Applying QFD in Healthcare
In healthcare, QFD can be used to design new services, improve existing processes, and prioritize improvement efforts based on patient needs. For example, when designing a new outpatient clinic, QFD would start with patient expectations (short wait times, clear communication, easy scheduling, comfortable environment) and systematically translate these into design specifications (staffing models, communication protocols, scheduling systems, facility design). The matrix helps ensure that no important patient need is overlooked.
Voice of the Customer
QFD begins with capturing the "voice of the customer" through patient surveys, focus groups, complaint analysis, and observation. These inputs are organized and prioritized based on importance to the customer. This patient-centered approach aligns with healthcare's increasing emphasis on patient experience and patient-centered care. The voice of the customer ensures that improvement efforts address what matters most to patients rather than what the organization assumes matters.
CPHQ Relevance
For the CPHQ exam, understand QFD as a planning tool that connects patient needs to organizational design decisions. Know the basic structure of the House of Quality and how it systematically translates customer requirements into actionable specifications. QFD demonstrates a structured, data-driven approach to patient-centered design.
