NCQA Accreditation and Recognition Programs
The National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) plays a critical role in healthcare quality, particularly in the managed care and ambulatory settings. CPHQ candidates should understand NCQA's programs, as they represent a significant component of the regulatory and accreditation landscape.
What Is NCQA?
NCQA is an independent, nonprofit organization dedicated to improving healthcare quality. Founded in 1990, it is best known for accrediting health plans (managed care organizations) and for developing the HEDIS measurement set. Unlike The Joint Commission, which primarily accredits hospitals and health systems, NCQA focuses on health plans, physician organizations, and specific clinical programs.
Health Plan Accreditation
NCQA Health Plan Accreditation evaluates managed care organizations across several domains, including quality management and improvement, utilization management, credentialing, member rights and responsibilities, and member connections. Health plans receive one of several accreditation levels: Excellent, Commendable, Accredited, Provisional, or Denied. Many employers and state Medicaid programs require NCQA accreditation for health plans they contract with.
Patient-Centered Medical Home (PCMH) Recognition
The NCQA PCMH Recognition program evaluates primary care practices on their ability to deliver patient-centered, coordinated care. Key elements include team-based care, population health management, care management and support, care coordination and transitions, and performance measurement. PCMH recognition has become increasingly important as healthcare shifts toward value-based care models.
Other NCQA Programs
NCQA also offers recognition programs for specialty practices, credentials verification organizations (CVOs), disease management programs, and wellness and health promotion programs.
