CPHQ Exam Day: What to Expect and How to Prepare
Knowing what to expect on exam day reduces anxiety and helps you perform at your best. This guide covers the practical details of taking the CPHQ exam so you can focus your mental energy on answering questions rather than worrying about logistics.
Before You Arrive
The CPHQ exam is administered at Prometric testing centers. Schedule your exam well in advance to secure your preferred date and location. Confirm your appointment a few days before the test. Gather your required identification: you will need two forms of ID, one with a photo and signature. Plan your route to the testing center and allow extra time for traffic or parking. Get a full night's sleep and eat a balanced meal before the exam. Avoid last-minute cramming, which tends to increase anxiety without significantly improving knowledge.
At the Testing Center
Arrive at least 30 minutes before your scheduled appointment. You will go through a check-in process that includes ID verification, a digital photograph, and a palm vein scan or other biometric verification. You will be asked to store all personal belongings (phone, watch, wallet, study materials) in a locker. The testing center will provide a locker key. You may be given a small whiteboard or scratch paper for notes during the exam. No personal items are allowed in the testing room.
The Exam Format
The CPHQ exam consists of 125 multiple-choice questions, of which 100 are scored and 25 are unscored pilot questions. You will not know which questions are pilot questions. You have two hours and 30 minutes to complete the exam. Questions are presented one at a time on a computer screen. You can flag questions for review and navigate back to previously answered questions. The exam interface allows you to review flagged items before submitting your final answers.
During the Exam
Read each question carefully and completely before looking at the answer choices. Eliminate obviously wrong answers first. If you are unsure about a question, flag it and move on; return to flagged questions after completing the rest of the exam. Pace yourself: with 150 minutes for 125 questions, you have approximately 72 seconds per question. Do not spend more than two minutes on any single question during your first pass.
After the Exam
You will receive a preliminary pass or fail result on screen immediately after completing the exam. Official results and your score report are provided by the Healthcare Quality Certification Commission (HQCC) within a few weeks. If you pass, your CPHQ certification is valid for two years and requires continuing education credits for renewal.
